13/06/2011 - KC Report

MEMBERS ONLY AMBROSE TOURNAMENT

Report from Kevin Campbell

At long last I have some results from the 9 holers; I thought they had stopped playing for the winter but no I have some news from them. The winner of the Par round held on 8th June was Nita Edwards and runner up was Susan Stephens who also scored the nearest pin on #16.

The 18 hole ladies winner on 35 points was Club President Sherry Weatherstone – good on you Sherry you are doing a great job for the Club. Second on count back was Elaine Howe with 34 points from Marilyn McKenzie. (I wonder if Marilyn has seen any stranger goings on around the place.) Nearest to the pin on #6 was Bindy McLeod while on #8 Kaye McIsaac was the closest and she got her two there as well. The only other two was scored by Julie Kidd on #16.

The Thursday Club had a good turn out of 36 players and the winners were Bob Goodley and Dean Eggers both with 41 points. There were three on 40 points and they were Matt Thomas, Bill Jones and Bob Tosswill while Derek Stephens had 39 points – a lot quieter on Thursday after his performance from the previous Sunday!

Two’s were scored by Martin Napier, Bob Tosswill and Graham Jacobson – I played with Graham and I have never seen a guy who turns himself inside out when he tees off, it truly is something to behold. Nearest the pin on #8 was Roger Parkinson, for about the fifth time but couldn’t convert it into a two.

Saturday saw a really good turn out – me thinks there were some matches to be played! The winner was Sandra Peterson on +7 which included her four extra shots. Patrick Pedlow was runner up on +6 then two on +5, Terry Blacktop and Ro Griffiths. The two’s were scored by Patrick, Terry Fraei, George Kirk and Jason van Zanten who had two of them. Nearest the pin was Roger Parkinson, who still couldn’t get a two, and the best gross was Jason with 77. I was not aware of this but Bill (the Builder) Crook sponsors the nearest the pin on #8 and also the best gross of the day. This is for Saturdays only so get behind Bill if you want a job done. I would also like to mention that Jason gave up golf for a couple of weeks to study for his very important papers at school – well done Jason, I applaud your reasons.

15 teams played in the mid winter Ambrose which was held last Sunday. It was a really neat day and there was plenty of humour to be heard around the course. The winners with a Nett 57.62 were Club Captain Kris Chamberlain, Cathy Ward, Lyall Callaghan and Bruce Ward – they had five birdies on the back nine for a 31 gross with a 34 on the front nine 65 off the stick; well done, a truly great effort. Runners up were John and Cathy Taylor, Marilyn McKenzie and Ian Stewart with a Nett 58. Third were Graham and Ryan Jacobson, Sandra Peterson and Reuben Crook with a Nett 59.13; this was great effort from this four – Ryan played pretty good and Reuben beat his old man, which didn’t go down too well! Nearest the pin for the ladies went to Marilyn McKenzie while the men’s was taken out by Ian Stewart.

This weekend is Stroke, Putting and Shootout as well as Round 3 of the Mba Order of Merit.

6/06/2011 - Ladies Open Day

PERHAPS, A SUCCESSFUL WEEK!

It has been a busy time at the club during the past week starting off with the ladies Open Day on Wednesday the 1st June - 61 ladies took part on a pretty good day with ten clubs being represented. The ladies gross was won by Christine Lewis from Masterton with a gross 82, five shots clear of Club President Sherry Weatherstone. There were three on 89 including Julie Kidd and Adele Cairns followed by Bindy McLeod with a gross 90.

Winner of the second division in the gross was Larraine Duckett from Masterton with a 94 off the stick followed by Pamela Messervy and Marilyn Mackenzie, both from Martinborough with a gross 95. (Now speaking of Marilyn Mackenzie, I do not tell a lie but she told me the other day that she saw a pig on a leash being walked down the road – wasn’t even a small pig either - poor Marilyn, I wonder what she had for breakfast!) Seven two’s were scored on the day and two of these were managed by Mariana McDermott and Sherry Weatherstone scored another for the locals.

In the stableford round Julie Kidd and Adele Cairns both finished with 38 points and 37 points respectively. In division two Sharon Jephson with 39 points won followed by Robyn Blackett with 38 points then Pamela Messervy and Elaine Howe both finishing with a respectable 37 points. Altogether a most enjoyable day and special thanks to Mary Desbonnets for her handling of her first major event.

And now to Thursday where 36 played and the winner here was fellow leftie Graeme McIsaac, with 42 points. Runners up were Stu Taplin and Garth Edwards both with 41 points - I believe Stu has gone to Trade Me for a new putter while Garth Edwards who had 23 points last week finally got his act together - funny old game golf, isn’t it? Green keeper Darren finished up with 40 points and two’s were scored by Garth, Darren and visitor Wayne Karaitiana. Nearest the pin was Bill Crook.

Saturday and a stableford round was played and three finished on 42 points; Shayne Hammond, Peter Bain and Patrick Pedlow followed by Lyall Callaghan and Bob Goodley on 39 points with Lyall and Tora Boyne scoring the only twos of the day. Best gross was won by Lyall – it’s nice to see the Martin 4 Ball matches being played on time and in keeping with the programme.

Onto Sunday where the Grandpa’s and Grandma’s played for a ‘walking stick’ trophy. A disappointing turnout but the winner of the grannies was Marilyn Mackenzie with 36 points, second Jennie Smith while third was Kaye McIsaac both with 33 points. The Grandpa’s was won by Patrick Pedlow with 41 from Bill Crook who had 38 points. Third and fourth and with 35 points were Martin Napier and Bob Goodley. The Ngahau Trophy for the ladies was won by Sherry Weatherstone from Sylvia Beavis and Lyle Griffiths and the men’s section was won by Lyall Callaghan from Ro Griffiths and Bill Jones.

The Sunday comp was won by the “Tora Postie” Derek Stephens with 42 points and boy, did he let it be known that he had won! Runner up was Walter Barber with 38 points as well as scoring the only two for the day. The “par of the year” was scored by Derek on the par 4 #7th hole – his drive went into the drain, he played out of the drain with his second but it went back in further down the fairway; he played his third shot from the drain - it hit a tree before landing on the green and he sunk the putt for his fourth – Unbelievable!

I also noticed there were five juniors out playing - George Wilkins a 9 year old who plays regularly scored 35 points while 9 year old junior William Durkin had his own caddie – keep it up boys!

24/05/2011 - Martin 4-Ball

THE CONTEST BEGINS!

Sorry ladies the weather for you last Wednesday was atrocious and as a result no results, so here’s hoping for a better result next week.

And so to the Grumpies and thanks for some inside information I have a story to tell. The contest for buying the most jugs is really starting to hot up. So far there have been 30 jug purchases and we are not even half way through the year yet. For those who don’t know, a ‘jug shot’ is when the men don’t reach the ladies tee when they tee-off. On the leader board at the moment with three each is Ro Griffiths, Paul Taylor and Ali Holmes, followed closely by Chris Griffiths and I can’t believe this, Bill Jones! Two visiting “Grumpies” Rob Smith and Shayne Hammond each had one jug on the only day they fronted up. “I bet they won’t be back again in a hurry.”

Thursday Club and 42 played – a great turn out. I am now starting to doubt this handicap system where the girls get four extra shots against the men. The winner was Ailsa Griffiths again with 43 points; Well done Ailsa. Runner up with 41 points was Bill Jago, then Darren (Man Power) O’Dwyer, Graham Jacobson, and here we go again Lisa-Marie Ireland all with 40 points followed by Ali Boyne with 39 points. Raymond Matthews, Bill Jones and Doug Clark all scored 38 points. Only four two’s were recorded – Man Power, Ailsa, Shane Hartnell and Bob Goodley and nearest the pin was new dad Doug Clark.

Saturday and there were quite a few matches played in the Martin 4 Ball, so good to see them underway. A Nassau Stableford was played and the winners were first nine - Derek Stephens and Ian Henderson with 20 points, second nine Bruce Ward, Shayne Hammond and Ali Boyne each with 21 points but Ali Boyne with 40 points was the overall winner followed by Shayne and Bruce with 39 points with Patrick Pedlow and Ian Henderson finishing up with 38 points. There were two 2’s; George Kirk and Adrian Blackett, a name that doesn’t come up very often, but Best Gross of the day went to Patrick Pedlow.

A stableford round was played on Sunday and the winner here was Ali Boyne; he just couldn’t do a thing wrong in the past week. He actually won his 4 Ball match on Saturday playing with Shane Hartnell where they won on the 20th hole. They beat the ‘deadly duo’ team of Ash Reed and Bill Crook. Runner up to Ali was Cathy Ward and Ailsa Griffiths both with 41 points followed by Ian Stewart, Matt Thomas, (who got the only two of the day), Clive Hartnell and Raymond Matthews each with 40 points and John Taylor with 39 points.

There were a few ladies playing from around the region preparing for the Lansdowne Trophy which was played on Monday and they were very happy with the conditions of the course. Thanks Darren.

A special bouquet must go to the “Grumpies” because from the first week of June they will be starting at 12 noon rather than 12.30pm on their day. What a brilliant idea – beats playing when the sun goes down!

25/04/2011 - Club Legend Shoots his Age -78

GOOD ON YER, BILL JONES!

9-Holers, I thank you for your results and information; it is so pleasing to see so many of you playing now. The result of the Sue Bunt Medal and Shootout sponsored by PGG Wrightson was Carol Parkinson in first place followed by Mary Herrick second and Julie Riddell third. Nearest the pin on #8 was Sandy and Susan on #16.

18 Holers and the winner here with a Nett 70 was Mariana McDermott followed by Jennie Smith who had a Nett 71. Nearest the Pin on #6 was Gail Freeman while Mariana was closest on #8.

To the Thursday Club and only 29 players last week - great to see Walter Barber and George Wilkins – two of the club’s very promising youngsters in the field. Even George Webby paid a visit and from all accounts is looking good and just as handsome as ever! Raymond Matthews won the comp with 42 points – he is obviously a very happy man now that his book is selling well! Runner-up was Bill Jones with 40 points. (Well done to Bill, who in my opinion is a legend at the club – shot his age, 78 off the stick.) Also on 40 points were Guy Walmsley and Colin Wilson. On 37 points were Carterton visitor Gillies Baker, Lyall Callaghan and Whitney Griffiths. Twos were scored by Colin Wilson, Bill Jones, Brent Keene and the humble writer of this article scored nearest the pin with a very clever shot!

And so to Saturday and another shock result; Ash Reed with 47 points – must like cored greens! Good one Ash. Runners-up were Walter Barber, David Ogilvie and Lyall Callaghan all with 42 points and twos were scored by Ash Reed and Club Captain Kris who also claimed nearest the pin. Best gross of 69 went to Lyall.

60 played in the Sunday Easter tournament with several visitors from outside the region. Marilyn MacKenzie with 41 points was the winner of the ladies followed by Diana Donald with 40 points and Kaye McIsaac with 39 points. Rosie Collins also featured in the prize giving and nearest the pin went to Karen Shaw while Liz Stone took out the Wriggly Line.

The Senior Division was won by Ian Stewart with 43 points while Brent Keene, Joe Tuoro, Whitney Griffiths, Lyall Callaghan and Terry Fraei all scored 43 points. Nearest the pin went to George Kirk while young George Wilkins got the Wriggly Line.

Division 2 where the scoring was outstanding – Wayne Hunter with 48 points won from Ted Peacock with 47 points and George Wilkins was third with 45 points.

This Friday, 29th is the Martinborough Junior Open. Three divisions for Gross, Nett and Stableford for boys under 19 and under 16 and girls under 19. Registration is from10am followed by a shotgun start at 11am.

The Men’s 36 Strokeplay Championship has been deferred until later in the year so the comp will be a Bisque Par round for both days. Round 5 of the Marquis Shield is at Featherston v. Masterton so good luck guys.

Good Golfing.

A BUSY WEEK

The 9 holers are increasing in numbers and the scoring is just great – on Wednesday, 9th March Viv Malneek with 22 points was the winner from Sherryl Howie with 20 points and Sherryl also had a two. Third equal on 19 points was Nita Edwards on a count back from Jill Colton. Nearest the pin on All Teed Up #8 was Karen Shaw. Thank you ladies for the info and I notice a few new names every week.

The Nancy McCormick was also held on Wednesday over 36 holes and the winners were Bindy McLeod and Mariana McDermott together with Jenny Wilkie and Louise Lyster sharing first equal. (I have no scores so not too sure what they scored) In third place were Jane Cooke and Lyle Griffiths – well done girls, a great effort.

And so to the Thursday Club and 32 players fronted up last week. The winners were James Elworthy and Patrick Pedlow, both scoring 41 points followed by Rob Smith, Martin Napier and Bill Jones with 40 points. (Read on to find out what happened to Bill and others on the previous Tuesday!) Two’s were scored by Bill Crook, Peter Hudson, Clive Hartnell, Lachie McLeod, Graeme McIsaac, Patrick Pedlow and Rob Smith. Nearest the pin was Garth Edwards which must have been a boost as he didn’t fare too well with the stableford points and neither did Frank Colton.

Saturday was the Business Women’s and Students stroke play tournament over 36 holes. Not too many entries but some of the older students from the club took part to boost numbers; they were Julie Kidd, Vicky Harris and Mariana McDermott to name a few and they also featured in the prize giving.

Then on Sunday another round of South African Stableford was played and the winners were “over the hill” members Bruce and Cathy Ward with 94 points. Bruce and Cathy travel from the Hutt every weekend so it’s nice to see their name in print. Runners-up and I don’t believe this, were Ash Reed and Malcolm Wood with 86 points and third was Roger Parkinson and John Taylor on 84 points.

Now….on Tuesdays - at the club there is what they call “the Grumpies” and last Tuesday (8th March) 18 played but I think they should now be called “the Grannies” because on Hole 5, six out of the 18 who played didn’t even reach the ladies tee! They were Bill Jones, Ro Griffiths, Rick Hargreaves, Ali Holmes, Patrick Desbonnets and Rob Smith. Bill Jones – you’re my hero and idol; what on earth happened? Nevertheless, I did hear bar takings were good for that day.

The Dry River Classic which was scheduled for next weekend has been cancelled so the course will be open for a stableford round and the same goes for Sunday.

Good luck to the Marquis Shield team playing Eketahuna and to the ladies for the Lansdowne Trophy v. Royal Wellington.

PRO-AM

Ladies Opening Day was brilliant with 48 ladies taking part in a great atmosphere with loads of fun and laughter – well done girls!

The Pro-Am which was held last Thursday was a huge success and proved to be very popular with the pros and visitors alike. Best score on the day was Douglas Holloway with a gross 63. An impressive 65 professionals took part in very hot and sunny conditions and although the round was slightly dragged out, it was still an excellent day. The winning team on 102 points and  representing Martinborough Transport was Josh and Daniel Hawkins and Robert Smith (Rob was a last minute ring-in for an injured Trevor Hawkins; well done guys!) Their professional on the day was Joshua Carmichael.

Runner up in the team’s event was a group representing Pakohe Lime – Bob Goodley, Lisa-Marie Ireland and Ash Reed. I heard that Lisa-Marie’s drive on the #4 hole went through the green and she scored a two – great stuff!

While still on the subject of the Pro-Am, thanks must go to all the sponsors and volunteers who contributed to making the day so successful and special mention must also go to Jimmy Napier who made a donation to the Martinborough School towards their ‘sun-shade project’ – thanks Jimmy.

The weekend’s competition was stroke, putting and shoot out and the winner on Saturday was Clive Hartnell with a Nett 60 – well done Clive; I’ve said for a long time now that the course is so easy! Ian Stewart, Doug Clark and Ash Reed were runners-up with Nett 66 and Ian Stewart took out the putting. Pete Smith with a Nett 64 was the winner on Sunday and Shane Hartnell, Ian Stewart and Lyall Callaghan all with Nett 66 were the runners up. Putting was won by Patrick Pedlow and 2’s were scored by Shane, Pete and Lyall.

Coming up this weekend is a stableford competition for both days.

The ladies have also started their Lansdowne Trophy and Riverside Cup matches so we wish the Silver and Bronze teams well for the year.

Finally and clearly noted by their absence, the club extends warmest greetings to two of its most well-liked members, Brian Moisley and George Webby – we hope this finds you both well on the road to recovery.

CLUB OPENING DAY

The new club season has finally arrived with a good turnout for Opening Day despite the races taking a few patrons but overall it was great to see so many new and old faces.

The Thursday Club had 43 punters last week and the winner with 46 points was Ash Reed. (46 points - He usually has 46 shanks!) The new track down from the #8th tee is rumoured to have been created for Ash purely because his tee shots always ended in the drain. Terry Blacktop and Bill Jago had 42 points, Murray Blackwell and Hamish Edwards scored 41 points while on 40 points was Shayne Hammond and David Kershaw. Good on you, David.

Nearest the Pin was Alister Holmes…. but I never saw his name in the two’s!

So to Saturday and the winner was Graham Jacobson with 45 points. Graham was using his father’s broomstick putter. He practiced 1½ hours before play and the putter proved wonders for Graham as he collected the birdsnest as well. Runner up was John Taylor with 43 points and next on 42 points was Guy Walmsley. Bill Jones and Bob Goodley had the only 2’s for day.

The ladies pennants teams were cancelled last Monday due to the wild and windy weather – I bet those playing at Miramar were quite happy.

And so to Opening Day – an 8 Ball Best Ball was played and the winners were Rosie & Stuart McLeod and Mary & Patrick Desbonnets with a Nett 49 – yes! Nett 49 – their combined handicaps would be bigger than NZ’s overdraft!

Runners up were Lachie McLeod, Derek Stephens and Bruce & Cathy Ward with a Nett 53. I saw Cathy get a huge 2 on #6 – it was brilliant.

Third place went to a team of five – John Slater, Garry Patterson, Terry Fraei, and new members Kaye McIsaac and Andrew Donohue with a Nett 54. To Kaye and Graeme McIsaac - welcome to the club.

Fourth place with a Nett 55 was Ian Henderson, Lyle Griffiths, Greg Stone and Graeme McIsaac – well done guys.

Fifth place went to Bill Jago, Reuben Crook, Patrick Pedlow and Terry Blacktop – what a brilliant four that was!

Nearest the Pin – ladies went to Cathy Ward and Bob Goodley took out the men’s. One of the highlights of the day was Bill Jones who shot one under his age off the stick – what a golfer!

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE CLUB

We at the Golf Club have lost a very good and excellent club captain, Neil Smith (Smithy). Neil was one of a kind and did a lot for the club, not only for the Club but the whole town. His drive and enthusiasm was unbelievable – always willing to stop and chat and make sure that everything was alright. An example of this was when I was sick last year; he made sure the lawns were mowed and there was plenty of firewood. He also had a great sense of humour and his jokes at the club house were met with great ovation and laughter. We will really miss you Neil; thank you to Mary and family – thank you for letting us share this great guy.

To other things and another member lost is Syd Ward – what a guy. I still remember him playing with Nancy Weatherstone in the 72 hole Mixed Foursomes; their combined age was 154 and they went on to win their group. George Webby too, is going through a really tough time at the moment but we have heard on the grapevine he has turned the corner and is now on the mend.

The club’s Opening Day is Sunday 6th February and the new club captain is Kris Chamberlain. We wish her well for the new season.

Green fee players, and there has been a lot of them, have been impressed with the course – thanks to Darren.

Thursday Club just keeps on being busy and the same old names keep winning – Alistair Holmes, Ed Elworthy, Bob Goodley, Ray Matthews, Andy Morrison, Bill Jones, Terry Blacktop and Bill the Builder to name a few but poor old Ash Reed – he’s going through a rough patch at the moment but gee, it’s great to have him back!

Good Golfing & Good Luck,

KC
